THE CITY OF THE QUINTAIN JOUSTING

FOLIGNO

We could define them a little bit egocentric, since they claim that the world's center is located right in the middle of a billiard table at the Caffè Sassovivo (which, unfortunately, is no longer there).

THE CITY

Invitation to the palace

Its position on the plain makes a walk through its historic center particularly pleasant. Among Foligno's main attractions are the Cathedral, its numerous oratories like the Nunziatella, that boasts a valuable fresco painted by the great Perugino, and the church of St. Maria Infraportas. Its absolute highlight is Palazzo Trinci, one of the few noble residences in central Italy. It proudly houses well-preserved original paintings from the early 1400's, some attributed to Gentile da Fabriano. In 1967 its Gothic staircase was the venue for a memorable show of international contemporary art, "The space of the Image", attracting famous artists like Fontana and Pistoletto.

The first edition of the Divine Comedy was printed in the Palazzo Orfini-Numeister printing house. Foligno can also be modern and contemporary. In fact it is the seat of the Italian Center for Contemporary Art  where you can admire one of the most important works of the 20th century Italian sculpture , the giant Cosmic Magnet of De Dominicis.

RASIGLIA: ITS SPRINGS, ANCIENT CRAFTS AND SPIRITUALITY.

Recommended for children.

This lovely hamlet is known for its springs that flow through the narrow alleys and stone houses. It recalls ancient times, when weavers, dyers and carpenters used to work here. Our visit will be accompanied by the gentle flow of water. Using the hydraulic power, the inhabitants of this village built many factories such as gualchiere, grain mills, wool factories and, in the last century, two hydroelectric power plants. The pervasive spirituality of the place is witnessed by the beautiful nearby Sanctuary of  the Madonna delle Grazie. The church, surrounded by a luxuriant nature, was erected on the site where a sacred image was found and was later frescoed in different periods.

Gourmet Corner

Foligno is known for its lively nightlife. There are plenty of locales to enjoy an aperitif and numerous restaurants that offer the typical Umbrian cuisine, reinterpreted in a modern key.
